Elementary School

From around age six, children enter the stage of concrete operations, which lasts until approximately nine years old. This stage brings significant changes in terms of physical development. Additionally, the first close bonds of friendship begin to form, gradually becoming a priority in their social world.

Until this stage, the body was the primary means of communication and interaction. Now, children begin to develop the cognitive skills needed to read, write, and calculate, gradually acquiring the capacity for abstract thinking, building on their manipulative and bodily experiences. A sense of belonging to a group also becomes increasingly important. Consequently, tools for conflict resolution and emotional self-regulation become fundamental.

With proper guidance, Elementary School children begin to form their own opinions while investigating and creating. They become self-aware and gain the skills necessary to live and learn in a community. They want to be, to do, and to learn—they are eager to explore and understand the world around them. It is essential that they are supported in facing life’s uncertainties, which requires developing diverse and flexible competencies, as well as becoming aware of the processes involved in problem-solving and in their own learning.
