Preparing students means equipping them with the tools they need for independent study.
At the Reggio Emilia School in Seville, students build their learning through a social-constructivist approach. How? Through inquiry. This involves verifying information and creating study journals; students chart their own learning paths and tell the story in their own words in their workbooks, rather than copying or memorizing from textbooks. To do this, they conduct a process of research and data verification to ensure the accuracy of the information they include in their work.
At the Reggio Emilia School in Seville, assessment across all areas of learning is carried out through four distinct and well-defined procedures:
- Daily monitoring of each student, recorded in each teacher’s journal.
- Final products of each research project.
- Study notebooks, which are the notes students take on each subject and which they themselves illustrate, outline, summarize, and write up.
- Review and self-assessment tests (students must be able to prepare for these by reviewing their study notebooks).
As for how we ensure our students’ academic level compared to the average of other schools in the region, our school complies with state legislation regarding academic content and ensures that students master it, even if through a school format that differs from the norm and which, in our opinion, is much more robust and of higher quality. No abrupt subject changes every 50 minutes, nor passive, one-way lectures. Students are seen and engaged; they love their school.
Making things difficult is not synonymous with greater learning. Neuroscience shows that there is no learning without emotion and that stress inhibits the ability to learn, just as we know that something has been learned when one is able to explain it to others; therefore, silence is not positive—what is positive is creating a calm environment where students can discuss what they are working on and studying.
