Learning in Elementary School
Starting at age 5, children begin to show a desire to participate in structured activities, but this should not lead to rote memorization or “false learning” based on memorization.
The Transition from Preschool to Elementary School
Gradually, starting at age 5, children begin to seek out participation in methodically structured learning and practice activities that require conscious effort. They ask increasingly complex questions and need to find the answers, as well as establish connections between things.
This should not lead to rote memorization or “false learning,” whose sole purpose is to “spit everything out on a test.” Rather, it should serve as the impetus to carry out, within a warm, harmonious, and supportive environment, rich and exciting processes of inquiry guided by the adults who accompany them.
Paying attention to each child’s individuality requires trusting in their potential, allowing them to develop, and discovering who they are without prejudice or labels. The starting point is the idea that we are all diverse; therefore, the goal is not homogeneity but rather living together in community—a community in which each person contributes their unique self.
The question would be: How would you like your children to be in 20 years? And your own answers will lead you toward active teaching approaches—those that foster meaningful learning and the holistic development of the individual, along with the skills needed to succeed in life (emotional and physical well-being, as well as sufficient cultural awareness and knowledge).
